Desert, dunes, volcanoes, waves and lagoons: Welcome to Fuerteventura!
Between north and south everything is different and despite the lack of vegetation, the landscapes are breathtaking. Totally different and surprising from one place to another, we do not get bored of it.
We arrived very early on Saturday morning so we could enjoy the whole weekend on the island. Once at Puerto del Rosario airport, we rented a car and drove direction south.
First stop at Sotavento beach, a large stretch of sand that goes to crystal clear water with a backdrop of golden volcanoes. It is a beautiful beach that worth seeing. The advantage is that even if it is touristic, it is very big and we have enough space.. And hopefully! Because it is full of nudists.
Then we try to go to Coffete beach (one of the most beautiful in Fuerteventura). A track/ road of about 16 km enable cars to get there. It is very good at the beginning but deteriorates afterwards and it is hard to go till the end with a rental car (normally the tracks are forbidden).
It can also be reached by foot. The hiking path starts at the beginning of the tracks and indicates 2h one way.
On the roads, the view is impressive with the golden colors on the volcanoes.
- Playa del Viejo Rey
After this failure we decide to go southwest of the island to Playa del Viejo Rey. Huge turquoise waves crash on the golden sand, the mist of the sea envelops the volcanoes on the horizon, it is an amazing place to stay until the end of the day to get nice colors.
The next day we go to the northwest part of the island, towards the village of El Cotillo.
On the road, we stop at the small village of Bittencouria. The village is a little bit empty at this season but very nice. It is a small white village, blooming and with cobbled streets.
- El Cotillo
El Cotillo would almost remind a village from French Brittany, it is very cute.
- Lagon Los Lagos
We were advised to go to lagoon Los Lagos and AMAZING PLACE! it is a little paradise. The first place we go through with a lot of people looks already very nice but while rolling towards the lighthouse, it gets even more beautiful and more natural… A small road which turns on the right which goes along the sea brings to the beautiful natural turquoise pool.
The black lava stone provides natural protection against the waves and creates small turquoise lagoons. The contrast between black and turquoise is beautiful.
We will finish those two days in Fuerteventura island in Corralejo where is located the natural park with dunes. It’s again very different from what we’ve seen before. The weather is bad but it gives beautiful colors and contrasts.
