There is a very nice biergarten where you can sunbathe and even swim. The water is very nice, clear, clean and turquoise.
From there, the last part to go to the castle is the “touristic” path. It is around 20 min going up on an asphalt road. It is possible to visit the interior of the castle but apparently it is done very fast and it doesn’t worth it. The exterior is the better preserved and apparently the nicest to see.
The best to get a beautiful view of the castle and continue on the right once arrived at the castle towards Marienbrücke. When I was there it was under construction and it seems that in winter it can be closed depending on the weather.
Otherwise just before the bridge, you can pass behind the barriers and go to the edge of the cliffs and have great views of the castle and also of Hohenschwangau castle.
Once back in Füssen, you should take time to visit its historical, very cute and typical city center.
HOW TO GO TO NEUSCHWANSTEIN?
By train: Trains run to Füssen station. Once in Füssen, you can walk to the castle through the lakes Schwansee and Alpsee and avoid the crowds.
By car :Drive direction Füssen and park on the shores of Schwansee Lake. From there, there is around an hour walking.
Of course you can also go directly to the parking right at the bottom of the castle (Alpseestraße 27, 87645 Schwangau) from which you can do the last meters by foot (15-20 min), by horse-drawn carriage or by bus.
